The White House disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.
